In 1999, cloned human brain cells, made from stem cells, successfully helped laboratory mice infected with human neurological diseases such as Tay-Sachs, a genetic disease that kills young children. But because the original cell was taken from an aborted 15 week old human fetus, there were protests so severe that stem cell research was stalled for ten years. It wasn’t until 2010 until the first baby with brain damage was cured from his own stem cells.

Human stem cells have the potential to be used in a number of medical treatments, relating to various diseases, injuries and areas of the body. This encompasses some of the most serious conditions such as cancer, brain damage, blindness and spinal cord injury.
Tumor treatment, particularly for those in the brain, has already shown success through gene therapy. Traditional methods are often ineffective due to the rapidity of tumor growth when it reaches the brain. When tested on rodents, stem cells reduced tumor mass by 81% after only a few days.This{{/tag} Read the rest of this entry »
